Educating, inspiring, and transforming current and future government leaders.

Public Service Recognition Week

My name is Sheila, and I am currently the Vice President of YGL. I have served in the federal government for 9 years. I came into the government on an Arabic language program while I was in graduate school and currently work in national security policy.

Over the past couple years, with the government shutdown and now COVID-19, being a public servant has been challenging. What has helped me through these difficult times is keeping the service aspect of my work at the forefront and reflecting on why I initially wanted to work in the government. My parents both served in the Army and instilled in me from a young age the importance of service to your community and country. Their example inspired me to pursue a career with the government. I love that my career allows me to make a difference in my community and serve a purpose greater than myself. It’s more than just a job that pays the bills but a way for me to live my values.

Especially during times like these when work is heavy, overwhelming, and frustrating, I encourage everyone to take Public Service Recognition Week to reflect on what being a public servant means to you and what initially drew you to pursue a career in public service. Thank you all for your service to our communities!

Sheila Helke
Vice President
